In Prince of the Blood, An English spy was using it to communicate to the English Royals, giving information about what was going on in France. It was eventually found by one of Catherine's minions, she then gave a copy to Francis who had Lola plant it in Narcisse's home, however she told Francis she hadn't planted it and told Narcisse she did. So he could remove it in time before the authorities found it.
