What we once had was so natural. I miss how easy it was. We'd make love and fall asleep in each other's arms like branches growing together. We didn't have to think about anything and now it's so complicated. I don't know if I'm ready.

Getaway is the eleventh episode of Season Two and the thirty-third episode of Reign overall. It aired on January 22nd, 2015.

Synopsis[]

MARY AIDS AN ENDANGERED CONDÉ — Mary takes action to save Condé when she learns the Vatican is hunting him for bearing the branded mark of the Dark Riders. Francis devises a plan to put an end to the Dark Riders legend, which puts Bash at risk. Meanwhile, Kenna reveals Catherine's ulterior motives to Claude. Greer, Narcisse, Leith and Lola also appear.

Plot[]

True to his word, Francis had all of the men hanged in the courtyard. The guards are now disposing of the bodies.

Kenna and Sebastian are making love, but Kenna is jealous of Claude and cannot stop talking about her, which annoys Bash. He makes sure to point out that Claude is only his half-sister. As they're having sex, someone knocks. Bash is taken out to the courtyard. All of men who were hanged bore the mark of The Dark Riders.

A cardinal and his cleric are there inspecting the bodies. The cardinal deduces that the riders are a scapegoat for the Protestants to use in case anyone discovers their secret brand. Bash tells him not to interfere, as any investigation is up to the King and his deputy, so he shall see to it.

Francis is trying to mend his relationship with Mary, but she is intent on living separate lives. She would like to visit their chateau in Chambord. He offers to go with her, but she would prefer to go alone. She doesn't want to give him hope. He will arrange for extra guards to accompany her instead.

Bash goes to the Cardinal to discuss the brand. He thinks someone branded the men after their death to fan the flames of hatred toward them. Their conversation is interrupted when a noble lady comes in, claiming to have information about a traitor who bore the same seal. However, she can only speak under the oath of confession, as she was sinning at the time of seeing it.

Jean-Philippe is sick and Lola doesn't feel comfortable leaving him with the nannies since the attack on the castle.

The noble lady named Condé as the traitor. Bash thinks it's rather convenient that she's coming forward after sleeping with him, while Francis struggles to see how Condé would be dangerous. Mary overhears them and goes to warn Condé. She intends to sneak him into her carriage and get him to Antoine.

Catherine is mixing garlic with arsenic as Henry snuggles up to her. Catherine is making a poisonous soup that she plans to feed Claude and slowly kill her in doing so. Catherine starts to second-guess herself, but Henry convinces her that killing Claude is the only way to spare her the wrath of the twins, Henrietta and Emone.

While walking in the hall and carrying the soup to Claude, Henry and Catherine talk about Kenna's ass, which Kenna overhears. Catherine denies talking about her ass and tells her to move aside.

Kenna got a whiff of the soup Catherine took to Claude, which made her suspect that Catherine is poisoning Claude. When Kenna brings her theory up to Bash, he finds it hard to believe, but suggests that she gather evidence.

Mary and Condé arrive at Antoine's place. He welcomes them and talks Mary into staying for the night and attending his party as the guest of honour. When Antoine pulls Condé aside and complains about his absconding with Francis' wife, Condé shows him the mark.

Back at the castle, Bash and Francis talk about how Mary swooped in and saved Condé from The Vatican. Francis says she has the heart of a warrior. He wants to fight with her. Bash wonders how the Cardinal would explain the brand if a loyal Catholic were branded.

At the party, Antoine introduces a new game. He will select one noblewoman and one nobleman and send them to a bed with people swaying sheets in front of it. Greer, being married, doesn't think the game is appropriate for her, so she leaves. Mary has the same thought.

Condé goes after her, but is detained by Antoine, who now loves the idea of Condé getting close to Mary. He wants his brother to make Mary fall in love with him so the rest will follow. Condé claims to not be interested in Mary, but Antoine doesn't seem convinced.

Kenna decides to pay Claude a visit, while the Cardinal is in bed with his cleric, Randall. They talk about Condé and about how to weaken him. When Randall leaves his lover's room, he is branded with the mark by a hooded man. However, the man also gets a slice across his arm, marking him as the perpetrator. The man turns out to be Bash.

At the party downstairs, Antoine pairs Condé with Lady Atley, while upstairs, Mary confides in Greer about how distant she feels toward everything ever since she was raped. She wonders if this is what her life will be like from now on. Greer reassures her that she will recover fully, but for the time being, she needs to let her heart rest.

Condé is reluctant to have sex with the Lady because of his feelings for another, but when she suggests that she blindfold him so he can pretend she's the woman he loves, he goes along with it.

After taking away several of Catherine's meals, Kenna helps Claude get back to her old self, but when Kenna tells accuses her mother of being the one who put her in that state, Claude gets angry. So angry, lashes out and confesses to being lovers with Bash, completely taking Kenna off-guard.

When Randall is taken into custody, the Cardinal goes to Francis and Sebastian and defends Randall's honour and loyalty. But Francis doesn't believe him and has him taken to the dungeon, all to get the Cardinal to surrender and recant his theory. But he doesn't, so Bash is worried the Cardinal may not truly care for Randall after all. If that's the case, then they may be forced to execute an innocent man.

The next day, when Condé comes to say goodbye to Mary, she tells him that she will return to French court. He warns her that she may not be safe there because of her husband's decisions, but Mary stands up for Francis. Condé has no idea how much Francis is tormenting himself because of what happened to her. She admits that she read his letter and knows he wanted to get it back.

Kenna confronts Bash about his past with Claude and then inquires him about the cut on his hand. After laying into him about how he never opens up to her, he finally tells her the truth, and it's ugly. Expedience is now more important than lives and the truth.

The Cardinal discovers Bash's wound when he comes to speak on behalf of Randall.

As Mary readies to leave Antoine's place, representatives from the Vatican arrive to collect Condé. Mary comes up with the idea of cauterizing Condé's brand, which would create enough doubt that they would all have to return to court, where Francis would help.

The brand is successfully covered and Condé is allowed to go to French court.

In the carriage on her way home, Mary tells Greer she was able to touch Condé when they removed the brand because he needed the support. She was able to connect. In that moment, she was reawakened and remembered that she's not the only one who's hurting. Francis is in pain, too. But she isn't sure if they can get back what they had. Are you ready to try, Greer asks?

Francis tells the Cardinal the Vatican's terror must stop. Spilling blood must stop. Francis wonders if the Cardinal is willing to sacrifice Randall. Francis was thorough in his research. He knows the Cardinal cares more about Randall's suffering than his own, and that is what love is. The Cardinal congratulates Francis on using the noblest emotion to manipulate and destroy someone.

Mary arrives at the castle and sees representatives of the Vatican packing their bags. She is pleasantly surprised to learn that she was working in tandem with Francis the whole time.

Greer tries to make small talk with Leith about his night at Antoine's place, but Leith calls her out for being jealous and tells her to put it aside out of respect for him. It only gives him hope.

Catherine walks in on Claude searching for the poison she's been using on her. Claude knew her mother hated her, but not to the point of killing her. Catherine tells her that she murdered her twin sisters out of jealousy from the attention they received from Catherine. Claude denies it, but Catherine doesn't believe her.

Claude almost drinks the entire glass of poison, but Catherine knocks it out of her hand and holds her as she breaks down in tears. Henry whispers in her ear not to betray her other children and walks away with the twins in disapproval.

Mary goes to find Francis and discovers him asleep on the bed with his son and Lola.
